Sheep dog trials are a competitive dog sport, which also offers an insight into the shepherd's daily (team)work with his or her dog. On these occasions the shepherd shows how his or her dog navigates a small flock of sheep through an expansive and rough terrain on an obstacle course. Whistling, hand signaling and calling from afar are permitted to the shepherd to direct the work of his dog.
