Flensing | Flensing

Flensing, 2019, 3 channel video installation, 2K, colour, sound, 30 min.

In the arctic summer, a small single-handed sailboat pushes through the pack-ice to the coast of East Greenland where the sailor comes across hunters shooting and flensing a narwhal and a ringed seal, and skinning and butchering a muskox.

The three channel video installation, depicting contemporary hunting practices of the East Greenlanders side-by-side with images of the pack ice along the coast highlights two conflicted issues: cetacean hunting in the broader context of the limited prey available in the region, versus the rights of indigenous hunters.

A project by Michael Thorne & Juliane Zelwies.
